Like other retractables in the Gear Keeper line, the RT3-5605 is engineered so that the tool, application and recoil/retraction force are in balance. Designed to avoid worker fatigue in order to maintain productivity, only minimal force is necessary to extend the RT3-5605 tether for use.

The RT3-5605 heavy-tool tether has a generous reach that extends more than 139 cm (55”). The strong, impact absorbing Nylon webbing for tools up to 1.58 Kg (3.5 lbs) does not require an additional shock absorbing lanyard end. Tools are attached via a Stainless Steel, thumb-controlled, locking-gate carabiner. The RT3-5605 also reduces arm strain when working with heavier tools; the tether features a thumb-controlled gear lock to secure the tool at any extension length. Included with the tether is a lanyard loop strap that can adapt virtually any tool of appropriate weight to be cinched securely to the tether.

Travelling for private or for business, it always costs you money. But if you look around on this planet , when on the road,  you will be at least one experience richer when you are back home again.

End of October Avera-Distributing participated in the A+A Show in Dusseldorf. This is a show about safety at work. Here we showed the new Gearkeeper line of Tool Tethering products.

SAFETY AT WORK
The A+A show is about safety at work. It was my first time to do this show and I was surprised by the large number of manufacturers of fall protection, flash lights, (safety)shoes, boots and an unbelievable number of producers of gloves.

TOP GLOVE
Our ‘neighbour’ across the aisle was the company Top Glove from Malaysia. They are the largest manufacturer of gloves and produce 44.000.000.000 pairs of gloves this year.

In their booth they had a plasma screen and all day long the promo video of the company was shown. The video ended with the corporate song.
During 4 days of A+A show I must have heard this song over 300 times.

In The Netherlands we are too much individuals to appreciate a corporate song. But maybe I am too much on the road to be still an original Dutch guy. I loved the song and the idea behind it.

Ergonomically constructed personal tool tethers are the key to maximizing worker productivity, convenience, safety and compliance. For heavy tools up to 11,3 Kg (25 pounds), Gear Keeper’s ergonomic anchored tool tether series is unique because it has been designed with a low-force polyurethane elastic core that has a 1:3 stretch factor (i.e. 90 cm (3’) relaxed – 270 cm (9’) extended. As a result, the new Gear Keeper polyurethane elastic core tethers have the shortest retracted length combined with the longest extension length offering significantly more stretch and retraction than competitive bungee-type core tethers.

The ability of Gear Keeper’s polyurethane elastic to retract to one-third of its extended length is a compelling safety advantage. The reduced length helps to avoid entanglement issues when climbing or working in close quarters. Additionally, to protect against dangerous ‘drop shock’, the new Gear Keeper heavy-tool tethers are load tested with a built-in safety margin beyond the breaking point.

Both of Gear Keeper’s new TL1-4021 and the TL1-4025 anchored tethers, with their polyurethane elastic cores, employ a very low stretch force. This minimizes arm fatigue at full extension, while still providing the proper degree of comfortable recoil. Employees will find their work more convenient and will appreciate the significant reduction in arm-stress. The ultimate result will be higher employee compliance with your tethering program.

The model TL1-4021 (€ 46,99) specifications include 2,54 cm (1”) tether webbing and two stainless steel carabiners load rated above 500 kgs (1100 + lbs.) with gates that do not hang up from a side load. It has a retracted length of 104 cm (41”) and extended length of 300 cm (118”).

The model TL-4025 (€ 42,99) specifications also includes a 2,54 cm (1”) tether webbing but has one stainless steel carabiner and a fixed web tool attachment loop. It has a retracted length of 127 cm (50”) and and extended length of 300 cm (118”). Both models are of an adequate length to attach to buckets.

Tethering at heights is the right thing to do but climbing with multiple tethers hanging from you is not so smart. The twin dangers of entanglement and falling become significant safety issues. Gear Keeper’s exclusive line of option rich retractable tethers all come standard with patented Q/C fittings. When a tool (weighing up to 0,9Kg/2 lbs.) is unplugged from the tether, the user simply selects the next tool to use, plugs it in and returns to work. The retractable tethering device keeps radio microphone in the proper position to maintain effective communications as recommended by International Association of Fire Chiefs.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program, lack of effective communications is one of the leading causes of non-cardiac line of duty deaths among firefighters. The International Association of Fire Chiefs has developed a series of portable radio best practices that include a recommendation that firefighters place radio microphones in close proximity to the mouth to avoid audio distortion problems when operating in environments with high levels of background noise.

IAFC said that firefighters should “ensure that the microphone is placed one to two inches from the mouth or SCBA voice port with the microphone positioned directly in front of the audio source.” A Mic Keeper device is designed to do just that. It keeps the mic securely in the proper IAFC position to operate the microphone appropriately when in use. When released after use, the mic will automatically retract to a secure position leaving the hands free to use other critical firefighting tools.

The Mic Keeper is a rugged, retractable system designed to utilize and protect gear in severe environments with maximum break strength and durability. It was developed based on the needs and comments of firefighters complaining about the lapel mic being a nuisance, always becoming dislodged and dangling, causing firefighters to step on or drag their mics. This often happens with strap-type radio belts. Although straps are an easy way to carry the radio for non-turnout gear times and are easy to throw on for turnout conditions they might not be the safest choice.  If the strap is worn over the turnout coat to facilitate access to the radio, it becomes an entanglement issue and the radio is not protected.
If the strap is under the coat you can not reach the radio.
According to Raul A. Angulo, a 32-year veteran of the Seattle Fire Department and captain of Ladder Company 6 who teaches classes on firefighter entrapment, “Not a lot of attention is paid to how firefighters wear their portable radios or where they clip their microphones. Angulo, writing in Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment Magazine1, added “As for the mic, your lifeline to safety and survival, I have found no better accessory than the retractable tether system of the Mic  Keeper. When I need it, I reach to my left shoulder and there it is, every time. I grab it, pull it to the voice amplifier of my SCBA, transmit my message and let it go. It smoothly retracts with a 12-ounce force.”

Like other retractable tethers in the Gear Keeper line, the Magnum series is engineered so that the instrument, application and recoil/retraction force are in balance. When the lanyard is extended for use, only minimal force is necessary thereby avoiding worker fatigue or in the reverse, causing a ”kick” when the instrument is automatically guided back to its stored position.

The RT3-45XX series (Euro 54.99 each) includes a carabiner to attach to a D-ring or belt loop and a carabiner that attaches to the instrument. The models include; RT3-4548 with a 56 cm reach for instruments up to 1.3 Kg.; RT3-4558 with a 56 cm reach for instruments up to 1.6 kg and RT3-4568 with a 40 cm reach for instruments up to 1.9 Kg.
