PALOMAR HIGH POWER REPLACEMENT FINAL AMPLIFIER

Under the name POWERBAND, the company PALOMAR in USA sells a line of
4 types of high power replacement final amplifier sections with high performance low pass filter for 10 meter amateur transceivers.

1
After RFX75 and RFX150 they now introduce the RFX85 and RFX85HD.

RFX75

2
RFX75 is an Amplifier, 75 – 100 Watt PEP Output Power, RF Final Output Stage and Low Pass Filter, Designed as a replacement and/or upgrade for most 10 meter amateur transceivers.

The RFX75 is a RF final output stage and low pass filter designed as a replacement and/or upgrade for most 10-meter amateur transceivers.
The RFX75 features the latest Power MOSFET technology and a built in S-meter detection circuit.
The output power of the RFX75 varies depending on the transceiver that it is installed on. Most installations will see 75 – 100 watts PEP output power.

THEORY OF OPERATION OF POWERBAND TYPES, DESCRIPTION OF RFX75:

a) The RFX75 replaces the transceiver’s final amplifier stage and low pass filter section.
The RFX75 is NOT a standalone amplifier. The RFX75 mounts to the back of most transceivers with little or no modification to the transceiver’s chassis.

b) Once installed, the transmitted RF signal from the output of the transceiver’s driver stage (or pre-driver stage) is sent to the RFX75 via the coaxial cable marked RF IN.

c) The driver signal is then amplified through the RFX75‘s ERF2030 (FET1) and then again through the ERF7530 (FET2).

d) The amplified signal from the ERF7530 passes through the RFX75’s efficient low pass filter.

e) A small portion of the signal is sampled through C19 and rectified through D3 and D4. This is sent to the S-meter detection circuit in the transceiver through the yellow wire.

f) The final RF output signal of the RFX75 is sent back to the radio through the RF OUT coaxial cable where it is connected with the transceiver’s antenna connector*.

g) The incoming receive signal is sampled from C14 and connected to the receive strip of the transceiver through the RFX75’s coaxial cable marked RX OUT.

* It is possible to attach the RF OUT coax directly to the antenna connector. However, it is recommended to attach it to the transceiver’s PCB because some transceivers come equipped with antenna warning systems, or other circuits, that are on ancillary boards between the recommended connection point and the antenna connector.

RFX150

RFX85 and RFX85HD

There are now 2 RFX85 Choices: the Standard RFX85 and the New RFX85HD High Drive.

The RFX85 Circuit includes driver stage, final amplifer stage and low pass filter. The RFX85 is your choice for 10 meter radio repairs and upgrades that require replacing the radio’s driver and final amplification stages.

The RFX85HD circuit includes only the final amplifier stage and low pass filter which makes for a much quicker and easier installation.

The RFX85HD is your choice for 10 meter radio repairs and upgrades when all your replacing is the final transistor or no transistors.

Both RFX85 units feature the new fan-ready heatsink design and variable bias controls for better tuning on SSB radio installations.

VISITING KINDERDIJK – NOT ONLY DUTCH WINDMILLS

This week we paid a family visit to Kinderdijk. UNESCO gave this place a World Heritage status. There are 19 old typical Dutch windmills to see and visit.

01

But stopping for a cup of coffee at the local restaurant Buena Vista gave us also a radio surprise. The owner of this restaurant showed a nice collection of antique broadcast receivers.

02
In the restaurant a nice collection of broadcast radio receivers.

03

04

Of course I also want to show some photos of this unique place with the typical Dutch Windmills that for many years made sure we had dry feet and were not flooded by the water.

05
Kinderdijk windmills: unique & iconic water management
A significant part of Holland is situated up to approximately 7 meters below sea level. The Dutch don’t notice any of this though, because an incredibly innovative and intricate system keeps the ever-rising seawater from flooding the land. Even during spring tide, the Dutch are safely guarded from being washed away…

The most important aspect of UNESCO World Heritage Kinderdijk is undoubtedly the unique collection of 19 authentic windmills, which are considered a Dutch icon throughout the entire world. A wonderful and unforgettable day trip in the Netherlands for the entire family!

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW IN LAS VEGAS

01
Every year the first important show for consumer electronics is the CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is one of the few cities in the world that has so many hotel rooms that it is no problem to house a show with 200.000 visitors plus thousands of exhibitors and regular tourists.

At the Hong Kong version of CES you will find much more suppliers for communication equipment than in Las Vegas. But at CES some of the brands have a more impressive booth than in Hong Kong.

COBRA

02Cobra active on CB, Marine, PMR, Radar Detectors, Dash Camera
and Power products.

Each year at CES, Cobra has an impressive booth. End of last year Cobra was sold to an investment company. That companies also purchased BELL, a big name in radar detectors. Within the industry there is a lot of speculation how long it will take before they will make it one brand and most of all: which brand will win the battle?

03At the Cobra booth an impressive car with Cobra equipment

04Radar Detector, Dash Cam and Smart Phone for easy driving

COBRA CB: HARLEY- DAVIDSON

05

For the American CB market Cobra took the Cobra 29LX and turned this model in the 29LX HD version. For Harley-Davidson freaks a must have in the car or on the motorbike.
Cobra is leading on the CB market in USA, but at CES they did not show many models. Let us hope they will have real news on CB next year.

COBRA MARINE: FLOATING MODEL

New for USA marine market is the HH500 FLT BT. Expected is that a similar model for European market will be introduced soon.

MIDLAND USA

07Midland Booth at CES, displaying CB, Action and Dash Cameras, GMRS/FRS and Blue Tooth applications.

Midland USA is the number 3 for CB in USA. But they are leading for action cameras and GMRS/FRS, this is a quite similar standard as the European PMR446 regulation. Also the Blue Tooth applications for motor bike drivers are very popular in the USA and Europe.

08Blue Tooth applications from Midland, quite similar to European series. On bottom a few types of CB Radio.

At CES Midland did not show many CB radios, they gave more attention to Blue Tooth products and Action and Dashboard Cameras.

09

10Midland has a wide range of portable radios

MOBILE GMRS/FRS

In Europe we have PMR446 portable radios. For us it is not allowed to have mobile versions of PMR446. In USA Midland introduced at CES a new mobile GMRS radio. It is a very compact radio and we can only dream about changing the European standard for PMR446.

11Mobile version of USA PMR446 version

UNIDEN HAS NO BOOTH AT CES

Uniden is the number 1 in USA for scanners and number 2 for CB. But since some years they have no booth at CES. The sales persons are available at CES to talk to customers but not on their own booth. For the industry it would be great if they decide to have booth at CES again.

But you can find Uniden products at the booth of CB Distributing. These people are always present with a booth to meet their customers from the West coast of USA.

12CB Distributing showing CB and scanners from all USA brands

CBD showed from Uniden two new radar detectors. These were brand new on the market. But also the new Cobra 29LX HD could be seen at the CBD booth.

13Rene from CBD proudly shows the Harley Davidson Cobra CB

GRE / WHISTLER

GRE used to be the number 2 for scanners in USA. Over 1 year ago they went bankrupt and were purchased by Whistler.

14Whistler showing their GRE scanner models. One of the models is linked
to a laptop. On the laptop a file from “Radioreferences” to transfer data
to the scanner.

Whistler is still using the brand name GRE and they still are 2nd on USA scanner market. Some models are also available on the European market. But on European market Uniden is by far the most popular brand for scanners.

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW

At CES you find a large variety of all kind of consumer electronics. Consumer communication products are hard to find at this show nowadays.
But for those interested in electronics it is a unique show in a unique city.

HONG KONG ELECTRONICS FAIR

The first show I visited in Hong Kong was the China Sourcing Show. Read my former blog about this show. The second show I visited last month was the Hong Kong Electronics Fair. This trade show is much larger than the first one. It will take you 2 days just to walk along all the booths.

1Entrance of Hong Kong Electronics Fair

SIMULAR SHOW

The show is larger but also quite similar to the first show. Again we saw lots of headphones, selfie sticks/mono pods, action cameras, power banks, key boards and tablets.
But this show also has many more suppliers of coax, inverters, portable radios and even some CB manufacturers.

PORTABLE RADIOS

I wrote already about the many brands that copy other brands and here we saw it again. But this time there were many more manufacturers from portable radios like PMR446, 2m/70cm VHF/UHF and HAM. The result was a lot of the same. After visiting 10 booths with portable radios I did not bother to much anymore about checking all the others. Some brands we know in Europe and some we had never heard of and are not available in the western world.

2Wouxun HAM radio with power supply

3Wouxun Portable radios

4OEM manufacturer for portable radios

CB RADIO

Uniden is the only large manufacturer that brings CB radios on the market using their own name. They were not present with a booth, but we saw some traders offering this brand.

5Uniden PMR446

The factories that were displaying CB radios at the show are not known by CB users by name. But the brands they produce for third parties are well known in Europe. In the European market we never see a brand like Yosun, but in Asia live much more people than in Europe. There is a big market for radios in that area too. But Yosun is also producing for Albrecht and Lafayette.

6Unknown factory making well-known brands

ACCESSORIES

Personally I was a little disappointed about the number of companies showing accessories. A lot of portable radios, coax, connectors, inverters but CB accessories were hard tofind.

One booth showed antennas that were copies of President, Sirio and USA type of antennas.

7Antenna models from President, Sirio and others.

MIDLAND

It was a nice surprise to see that Midland had a booth at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair. Also in USA at CES they are always present to show the latest items they sell.

8Midland present at Hong Kong Electronics fair

Midland has a large range of action cameras. In Hong Kong two brand new CAR CAMCORDERS were showed. One regular model and one with GPS included. Great small cameras for in your car to record all that is happening in front of you. A 5 cm display shows what is recorded. Soon these two cameras will be available from Avera!
Watch for the Street Guardian and Street Guard GPS!

9Midland Street Guardian, Car Camcorder

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW LAS VEGAS

Visiting these two shows was quite interesting. Mostly because it was my first visit to the Far East. Trade shows all over the world are quite similar. You also often meet the same people, but what else to expect in our consumer communication branch. It is a small world!

In January it is time again to visit the CES in Las Vegas. And you know: “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas !”

But… I promise you all, I will write about the Consumer Electronics Show so you know what was happening there.

VISITING TWO ELECTRONIC SHOWS IN HONG KONG

Avera is importing many famous USA brands like GearKeeper, Magnum, Motocom, K40, Willson, Astatic, Solarcon, RoadPro etc. To meet these companies or brands I travel to the USA a couple of times a year.

To prevent travelling too much it is often easier to visit a trade show. That enables you to meet several companies on one location.

There are three major trade shows in the world for consumer electronics. In USA is the CES, Consumer Electronics Show. In Europe it is the IFA in Berlin. And in Asia it is the Hong Kong Electronics Show.

For more than 20 years I visit the CES in Las Vegas to meet business relations from USA and around the globe.. Although Avera is also doing business with several companies in Asia for over 35 years this was my first time to visit two electronic trade show in Asia.

CHINA SOURCING FAIR AT AIRPORT EXPO

1
The first show that I visited was at the Expo Center near the Hong Kong airport, Just to walk along all the booths takes more than a full day. Surprisingly within 30 minutes we ran in to two relations from USA who frequently visit this show.

Let it be clear, there is no real trade show for consumer communications anymore. Our business is just a very small part of the general consumer electronic business. What we saw from many factories were items like mono pods/selfie sticks, power banks/USB chargers, headphones, keyboards, tablets. All kind of items that are popular by a large public, bought by many and made by many.

2headphones were available from many sources.

PORTABLE RADIOS

In the field of consumer communication there were many companies offering PMR446 or 2M/70CM portable transceivers.

In the past companies like Kenwood complained about a brand like HYT that was copying there products. Now a days HYT is grown to a ‘regular’ company and there are companies that copy HYT and their digital line called HYTERA.

You will find brands with nearly same names or nearly same logo’s that sell nearly same products.

3We know HYT but never heard before of HQT.

4 We know HYTERA but never heard before of KYDERA.

CB/27MHz

I hoped to see the few manufacturers of CB transceivers that are still around but I only found two. The only thing they showed that is not totally new on the market, but not regularly sold in Europe is a CB with a bluetooth dongle.
This enables you to communicate with a bluetooth device in stead of the regular CB mic.

5CB transceiver with Blue Tooth dongle.

6The dongle has a two pin connection,
on the front is the jack to plug in the dongle.

Another company manufacturing CB and 10 meter radios we saw was Anytone. There products are not very popular in Western Europe or USA. The quality is mostly not to be compared with Uniden/President or Midland.

7 Anytone showing some product.

So far the show at Asia Expo, next time I will write about the Hong Kong Electronics show that started October 13.

BUTEL SOFTWARE; ARC125 FOR (U)BC125XLT SCANNER

Butel Software, established in 1999 by Gommert Buijsen, is the leading manufacturer for scanner software in the world.
They produce software for Uniden-Bearcat models in Europe and USA, but also for brands like AOR, ICOM and others.

Avera is distributor of the complete range of scanner software made by Butel Software from The Netherlands.

Let us have a look at one of the most popular software programs sold now-a-days, the ARC125.

ARC125: The programming software for the (U)BC125 XLT scanners.

1
The UBC125XLT is a nice and compact scanner that can store up to 500 memory channels. To make it easy to program the 500 memories the ARC125 programming software was developed by Butel Software.

ARC125 has a very friendly spreadsheet like user interface. This makes it very easy to program new frequencies in the UBC125XLT scanner.

You can easily cut/copy/paste data. You can also import frequency data from any website using the intelligent ‘Paste frequencies’ option.

Channels can be inserted, deleted and sorted using the menu options. But you can also easily swap/copy/move entire banks.
2
You can store an unlimited number of frequency files.
Uploading to the scanner is fast and smooth using the USB port.

ARC125 comes with a driver for the European UBC125XLT and the US version BC125XLT. After installing the driver, ARC125 will automatically detect the (U)BC125 scanner. ARC125 is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7/8.
